Temperance represents the archangel Michael, who is said to rule both fire and the sun. He is seen pouring the essence of life from the silver cup into the golden cup, from the unseen into the seen and then back again. This symbolically shows the entrance of Spirit into matter and the influence of matter upon Spirit. It also shows the past flowing into the present and into the future. The water in the pool indicates the subconscious mind of man and the universe. Michael stands with one foot on the earth and one on the water to show that he is equally at home in the conscious and the subconscious. When Temperance appears in a spread, it tells of the need for adaptation, tempering, coordination and self-control. We should work in harmony with others. Above all, don't overdo things; but take life at a moderate pace. Patience will win in the end. |
