The Devil is the opposite of the Archangel Michael as seen the card "Temperance". He has a goat's face and horns; bat wings and donkey ears that suggest the obstinacy and stubbornness of materialism.

His right hand is raised and giving the sign of black magic. This is totally opposed to the Hierophant's raised hand which is giving a blessing. The symbol of Saturn, the planet of limitations is on his palm.

His left hand holds the smoldering torch of destruction and on his forehead is an inverted pentagram, denoting evil intent.

A man and a woman are chained to the small throne of the Devil. It is here where becomes evident that men are chained by their own wrong choices. Also, the chains about their necks are loose and can be removed at will.

When the Devil appears in a spread, it puts you on notice that you are too involved and wrapped up in material concerns. Your journey in life is off course and you are now traveling up a dead-end street.
